A mighty fortress is our God!

October: that month when colder air begins to make its way into Texas.  October: that month when some of the leaves start to be tinged with a bit of gold.  October: that month highlighted by the Texas State Fair and the annual Texas-OU weekend.  And October: the month in which we celebrate the Reformation of Christ’s Church!  According to the story, it began on October 31, 1517, when an Augustinian monk, Martin Luther by name, walked to the church in Wittenberg, Germany, and nailed to the front door (the town bulletin board) his 95 Theses—items (all written in Latin) that he wanted discussed by the theologians of his day.

Of course, as these things happen, some enterprising printer had them translated into German to be distributed all over the land, and soon this obscure monk was being celebrated as a national hero, and the Protestant Reformation was under way.  Of course, there was much more to it than that, but….

And, in reality, the reformation of the Church, didn’t begin in 1517, nor did it end when Luther died in 1546.  The Reformation, the true Reformation, began when the Holy Spirit was first poured out on Pentecost, not long after the resurrection of Jesus.  And it still continues even today.

For the Spirit of God is a living Spirit, and a living Spirit infuses the Church with its very life, so that the Church is always being reformed—always and forever until the Lord of the Church returns in power and great glory.

So come celebrate this continuing reformation with us on October 28—and throughout the month of October!
