ASH WEDNEDAY INAUGURATES THE SEASON OF LENT"You are dust, and to dust you will return.” Beginning with these sobering yet holy words, the penitential season of Lent begins with the imposition of ashes. It’s a sacred time, a time when we come face to face wiht the reality of who we are; sinners, broken people, in need of forgiveness, healing, reconcilliation. It’s important to note that when the ashes are placed upon our brow and the above words are spoken, that the ashes are placed upon us in the sign of a cross. Why? Because once, a long, long time ago, that same sign was placed upon us in our baptism, when we first knew that the cross is the symbol both of God’s judgment and God’s salvation. The cross is God’s judgment upon sin, death, evil, and all that is unholy. The cross is God’s salvation for all who, in faith, trust in him for mercy and forgiveness. As always, there will be two worship opportunities on Ash Wednesday: at 10:00 am and at 7:00 pm. Holy Communion will be offered at both. Special music will also adorn our worship both in the morning and in the evening. Come join us! |
