October 07

After their Summer Pool Tour, the high school youth are back to meeting for dinner, planning and Bible study on Sunday evenings, and the middle schoolers are back to Confirmation classes on Wednesday evenings, also beginning with dinner.  The classes were preceded by a Confirmation Retreat on Friday evening and Saturday, September 7-8.  Instead of going to Briarwood, the continuing and new students met at the church for a lock-in and then relaxed at the pool at Pastor Bill and Carol Waxenberg’s home.  September also saw the start of a First Bible class for grades 3-5, which will conclude in November with a retreat.

What a melodious sound to hear little footsteps as they enter the sanctuary every Wednesday morning!  At the beginning of this school year, we started a new form of worship experience with our children called “Worship and Wonder” which is held every Wednesday morning at 8:35 a.m.  This program grew out of the desire of our staff to give even our youngest children a place where they can worship, praise, and learn about their Heavenly Father within a setting that has been specifically suited to their developmental needs.  The worship experience builds on our weekly bible curriculum that the teachers use in their classrooms.

October: that month when colder air begins to make its way into Texas.  October: that month when some of the leaves start to be tinged with a bit of gold.  October: that month highlighted by the Texas State Fair and the annual Texas-OU weekend.  And October: the month in which we celebrate the Reformation of Christ’s Church!  According to the story, it began on October 31, 1517, when an Augustinian monk, Martin Luther by name, walked to the church in Wittenberg, Germany, and nailed to the front door (the town bulletin board) his 95 Theses—items (all written in Latin) that he wanted discussed by the theologians of his day.

I have had a love affair with fiber for most of my life. It probably began when I first stabbed a sharp needle, threaded with a length of colored thread, through a piece of fabric. Anchoring the thread first in one direction and then the other, my efforts left a crooked X on top of the stamped picture on the pillow case my mother had prepared for me.  Over the years I have moved away from cross stitching on stamped fabrics and discovered the joys of numerous forms of ethnic and regional embroideries. Using cotton, linen, woolen, metallic and silk threads, I have embellished canvas, cotton and linen fabrics. I love the opportunity to be creative and productive, to share the finished product with someone I love, and to feel the connection with women down through history who spent precious time making everyday items not just functional, but beautiful to behold.

Q&A With Our CDC Director
The building renovation provides Christ Lutheran Church with greatly-enhanced ministry opportunities. We wanted to use some Building Blocks updates in the next few weeks to provide you with some specific examples of how individual ministries will be impacted by our new facility. This week, we’re sharing some highlights from a recent conversation with our Child Development Center Director, Cori Berg.

Baptisms, Weddings, Installations and Words of Thanks.

For Luther, any vocation in which God is glorified and our neighbor is served can be a Christian vocation.  It all begins, of course, in Holy Baptism, where Christ Jesus claimed us for his own, and poured out his Spirit who has blessed us with an abundance of gifts.  And these gifts were given, not simply for our sake, but for the sake of both the church and the world.
