February 08

The Dallas Morning News recently endorsed former Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee, as their choice for the Texas Republican presidential primary, to be held March 4. The editorial board gave many reasons for their endorsement, not the least of which was that Mike Huckabee "has a pastor’s heart."

In February, a total of 495 pounds of non-perishable food and personal hygiene items was collected for the Mt. Olive Food Pantry. That brings the 2008 total to 895 pounds.  Please remember to bring items the first Sunday of every month to help us reach our goal of 6,500 pounds. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry.

Previous Year Totals:

2007 - 7,488 pounds

2006 - 6,798 pounds

2005 - 6,514 pounds

2004 - 5,386 pounds (10 months)

TOTAL: 26,186 pounds (does not include 2008)

Ever since I arrived in Dallas last August, I have heard excited talk of the new building at Christ Lutheran Church.

January offered some exciting opportunities for the youth at Christ Lutheran.

Shuffling through a clump of doilies, conversations hearts, and miniature cards with such zest that I haphazardly ripped the construction paper pocket I had toiled over just days before, I finally found it… my first love letter.

In this month’s article, I will share a thrilling experience that has now happened to me twice in my lifetime.

The Christ Lutheran Book Club has selected books for the next several months!  We meet the first Monday of every month, at 7 pm at a different member’s home.  The Book Club is open to all members of Christ Lutheran Church, so please plan to join us for one (or all!) of our gatherings.

In February, love is in the air… and we’d LOVE for you to attend some of the CLCW events taking place this month!

Eric and Noriko (Yoneyama) Sell invite you attend a ceremony to affirm their marriage vows

Think about a fun filled evening with good food, beverages, lots of laughs, good friends and bring a new friend,  a time to bring an article for the Big Lutheran Basket to benefit the MOSAIC Gala Auction......and special entertainment!!!

Following the 11:00 worship service on February 10, and following a light reception for newlyweds Eric and Noriko Sell, we will celebrate our ministry—past, present, and future—at our annual meeting.  Reports will be heard, elections will take place, the adoption of our budget will be a top priority.  All of which is reflective of the work of God’s Spirit among us.  So come and join us in our new fellowship hall!  Written annual reports are available in the narthex.

What are you doing on the first Thursday of each month?  Want to start your day in a new way?

"The discipline of Lent.”  What a way to begin a pastor’s column!  Why, you may even stop reading these words here and now, simply because the whole idea of "discipline" is so foreign to our culture.  But if you have continued reading, what’s this all about, this "discipline of Lent?"

Each Lenten season, there’s a theme that weaves its way in and out of every Wednesday evening worship service.  This year the theme will be Luther’s Small Catechism.

"You are dust, and to dust you will return.”   Beginning with these sobering yet holy words, the penitential season of Lent begins with the imposition of ashes.

"The advent of our God shall be our theme for prayer…."
