“We need rain. We need rain!” I heard this refrain for weeks before I left Dallas. I would have preferred that the long awaited downpour had held off for just a few more hours, but by the time we crossed a few state lines, I had dried out. This is one of my last views of Dallas as I followed that bright yellow truck north to Columbus.

We drove out of Texas, up through Arkansas, across Tennessee, over Kentucky, and into Ohio. Just outside of Columbus we met my brother and sister-in-law and my youngest son for lunch before arriving at the seminary apartments in time for Blake and Deb to get to the airport for their return flight to Houston. The rest of us, and some gracious summer students I had never met before, spent two hours undoing the marvelous job the loaders had done the day before when they fit all my “stuff” into that truck! We were again amazed at the way they had used every available inch to
pack boxes and furniture into the truck. (Best Move, if you ever need help with moving!)

I’m not exactly sure where this summer went but one thing I know for certain is that fall is just around the corner! Can you believe it?! The children are back to school and routines are beginning to set in. Along with that is the church calendar “gearing up!” Circles are jumping into fall with new studies.

Come visit the Christ Lutheran Church Women (CLCW) table at Rally Day (Sept. 14 between services) to learn more about the many circle and fellowship opportunities. We also invite ALL WOMEN to the Fall Bible Study on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the church. Lunch will be provided as well as childcare. There will be a study of Psalms 22 and 23 in addition to fellowship and learning more about the activities of the women of Christ Lutheran Church.

Don’t think I have to introduce myself to most of you at CLC but in case you have not heard I have a new hat, a hard hat to be more exact. I am filling in for the balance of the position on council chairing the property and maintenance committee. Crazy you say? I said the same thing but said "yes" none the less; so here WE go!

It is hard to believe that it is back to school time for many. Back to school time also means that it is time for our third (of four) blood drives of 2008. Thank you to those of you who participated in the June drive: George Barber, Gretchen Cooper, Heather Hartman, Juris Laivins, John McConnell, Ed Rittmayer, Ted Simon, Elaine Smith, Mark Stein, Pam Stein, Connie Uhri, and Melanie Watson. These 12 people helped boost our yearly total to 23. Our next drive is September 7th in the parking lot from 8:30 to 12:30. We hope to see as many of you as possible.

Congratulations to Melanie Watson, our latest "Gift for Givers" winner! All donors are eligible for the gift basket drawing which is held the Sunday after the drive. Many thanks, also, to those of you who have donated items for the Gift for Givers basket. Hope to see you September 7th!

A huge thanks to everyone who helped make our Rainforest Adventure a success. Over thirty children attended VBS. Many were members at Christ Lutheran and their friends, children from the Child Development Center and children from the area.

WOW! This has certainly been a busy summer. We have had two new hymn fests during the summer, where we gathered in between services and sang some wonderful new hymn from our new hymnal. We also spent an hour looking at setting two of our liturgy from ELW. We sang it wonderfully and will begin using this setting on September, 28th.

When I was in first grade, I attended a small Lutheran school in the mountains of Utah. The school was a second home to me, as my father was the pastor and my mother was the kindergarten teacher. At that time, the church was using every available space to house the school. The second through sixth grades held classes in a converted barn on the property. The kindergarten class was in a small room toward the back of the church. The first grade classroom was in the fellowship hall with temporary walls that could be opened up on Sunday mornings for coffee hour.

Beginning on Sunday, September 21 (the Sunday after Rally Day!), ALL adults are invited to one of two studies upstairs in our new education building. Both classes will use the same book, Real Faith for Real Life, by Lutheran pastor Michael Foss. But the book will be discussed in two very different ways! One class, led by Carol Waxenberg, is designed for parents with children. What are the values we’re imparting to our kids? By our words and actions, what are we conveying to them about what is important—really important—in life? The second class is designed for all other adults, and asks the question: What are the values by which we live? How does faith play a role, a critical role, in our life, our vocations, our role as citizens? This class will be led by Paul Pedersen, our intern Ladona Webb, and Pastor Bill. We have ordered 60 copies of Pastor Foss’ book, the cost of which is $12 per copy.

However, the first twenty people to sign up for this class will receive theirs free (a donation from a generous friend!). So sign up on Rally Sunday!!

CLC has a new arrival!!! It is blue and waiting for you near the alley in the main parking lot. Please go by and pay our “Baby” a visit. While you are there drop off your recycling items, plastic (# 1-7), & metal. We will be recycling these items through the city and the dry paper, magazines, etc. with the Paper Retriever when their container is dropped in the same area.

Three years after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Mississippi Gulf Coast, thousands of families still live in unsafe temporary housing. On behalf of its members, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has committed $2.5 million to Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast to build up to 40 homes, plus a neighborhood pavilion and a park. This is part of a $125 million alliance between Thrivent and Habitat for Humanity International to build thousands of homes in the U.S. and around the world.

New beginnings are exciting —and challenging! Anytime we begin something new, there’s always an air of excitement along with a hefty dose of anxiety.

For several weeks during this summer, you have seen pictures of bridges scattered throughout the Sunday bulletin. Did you wonder why they were there? It’s been a way to pique your curiosity about a new idea that’s taken on a life of its own, beginning on Wednesday, September 24.

A new year begins! On Sunday, September 14, at 9:45, in our new Fellowship Hall, a new year of education ministry begins with gusto! It’s Rally Day for Sunday school, as our children meet their teachers for the year. It’s a sign-up day for all adults who are invited to a new learning experience, using the book, Real Faith for Real Life, by Michael Foss. It’s a Ministry Fair for all adults and children, as each ministry within our congregation hosts a table for you to learn what these various ministries do and receive an invitation to join them. And what fair would be complete without ice cream? So frozen treats will be available, courtesy of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Come join us for a super-duper Sunday!
