November 2008

Christ Lutheran Church Women (CLCW) President Jacquie McConnell writes: Autumn is upon us, and this year is a very special autumn as we exercise our right to vote. Recently, I ran across this quote from General Colin Powell: You have been given citizenship in a country like none other on earth, with opportunities available to you like nowhere else on earth. What will be asked of you is hard work; nothing will be handed to you. Use your education and success in life to help those still trapped in cycles of poverty and violence. Above all, never lose faith in America.  ts faults are yours to fix, not curse.”

We hope you will find a place in Christ’s congregation to use your education and success to reach out to those trapped in cycles of poverty and violence. As we move through the church year, let us be ever mindful of how we can make a difference in the lives of others and be an example of God’s love.

Next year, the Youth Committee will become  the Youth and Family Ministry Team, with an increased emphasis on ministry to youth of all ages and their families. In fact, our awesome "youth guy," Scot Redman, is actually our Youth and Family Minister, and he has been involved with families from the start. We hope you will get excited about the events we have coming up!

Long ago our congregation made a commitment to our Child Development Center.  Over the almost sixty years of serving both congregation and community we have seen a lot changes.  At one time there was a kindergarten here.  Spanish was once taught within our walls.  An after-school program shepherded children in our gymn after we picked them up from University Park Elementary School.

Such commitment is vital for the future of our pre-school.  Over ten years ago, we did a study, asking the question: should CDC remain as a ministry of our congregation, or should we allow them to incorporate, become a separate entity, and rent space from us?   After months of study, prayer, and discernment, we came to the conclusion that CDC should remain a ministry of Christ Lutheran Church.  Three things would guide us into the future.  First, we would be very clear that we are a Christian pre-school.  We would talk about Jesus.  Second, we are a Lutheran pre-school.   That’s our heritage and tradition, and so we will use Lutheran curriculum.  And third, any and all children, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background would be welcomed here.

With grateful hearts we come before our God!  With songs of praise we offer our thanksgivings to the God who has blessed us with the gift of life!  With words and deeds we thank him, serve him,  bless him.  Grateful hearts are one of the surest signs of as deep and abiding faith.

So we will have no less than three thanksgiving services during the month of November!  The first one will be on November 2, All Saints Sunday, when we will thank God for those we have loved who have gone before us into his eternal kingdom.  The saints of God have thankful hearts.  In addition, to this day, then, we will also pledge our dollars for the work of his kingdom here and now.  Pledge cards will be mailed to you the week before.  Our financial pledges are one way we have of saying “thank you” to God for all he has done and continues to do.
