Psalm 79
Micah 5:1-5a
Luke 21:34-38
Reflect:
“And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD.”
We do not always understand the significance of an occupation that is attributed to someone in scripture. And yet, Jesus is usually known as the perfect example, or the one who provides the inspiration to be the best one can be at it. So it is for the prophet Micah who anticipates the day when a child is born who will shepherd his people in the strength of the LORD. A shepherd will defend the lives of his sheep with his own life by laying across the entrance to the sheep fold.
You are invited to watch these short videos on YouTube to get a sense of a shepherd’s life and responsibilities. Then consider what your ideas might be about Jesus as the good shepherd.
Pay close attention to the first video. The narrator mentions that he buys the skinniest, sick sheep that no one wants. He takes them home, heals them, and makes them strong. You will see him dragging them against their will through the crowded village street. He says that being a shepherd has given him a better understanding of man and of God.
